Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of hosting Bethanie Carney Almroth, a world-leading scientist, to shed light on the critical issue of plastic pollution. Bethanie is a professor in eco-toxicology at the University of Gothenburg, coordinator of FRAM (Center for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management Strategies), and a plastics expert for The Perfect World Foundation.
Her research focuses on the environmental effects of plastics, microplastics, and chemicals on aquatic organisms at the molecular and physiological levels, as well as their broader impact on the planet’s ecosystems.
Bethanie joined us at our Gothenburg office for a breakfast seminar, which was also broadcast via Teams to all our employees.
“My personal takeaway from the seminar was how plastics are consumed by us humans, that children are born with microplastics in their bodies, and how this affects boys’ future ability to become fathers. It was an eye-opener and quite alarming,” says Nicolas Myrén, after the seminar.
” I think just looking at the specific issues of plastic pollution, and its detrimental effects, shows why it is so important to work with sustainability on all levels. It definitely sets a sense of urgency; if plastic pollution causes this much damage, imagine the damage when we consider more aspects withing sustainability. The need for creating a sustainable tomorrow gets more urgent for every day”, says Patrik Westræus, head of sustainability.

About Project Ocean
Through Greencarrier’s partnership with The Perfect World Foundation, Project Ocean allows for us to be a part of improving the state of our ocean and the maritime environment. Project Ocean consists of ten action points where issue such as the recycling of marine debris, the salvaging of marine debris, the planting of coral reefs, and the clean up of our beaches are all addressed.
