Greencarrier and John Nurminen Foundation join forces to protect the Baltic Sea and its maritime environment

Greencarrier is proud to announce a new partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation — one of the leading organizations dedicated to protecting the Baltic Sea and preserving its maritime heritage. Through a three-year collaboration, Greencarrier will support the Foundation’s projects to restore marine ecosystems, reduce pollution from shipping, and protect the marine environment.

Since 1992, the John Nurminen Foundation has been working   to improve understanding of the Baltic Sea and to mitigate the risks that it faces. The foundation runs a series of projects aimed at improving water quality, reducing nutrient loads, and addressing related environmental challenges such as eutrophication and biodiversity loss.

Greencarrier chose to partner with the Foundation because of its measurable results, long-standing expertise, and transparent, hands-on approach to environmental restoration.

The partnership aligns with Greencarrier’s Blue Initiative, a key part of the company’s 2027 strategy, which supports various projects aimed at reducing the environmental impact of shipping and promote healthier oceans.

A portion of Greencarrier’s annual contribution for 2026 will support the SeaToo Project — a large-scale initiative focused on restoring underwater habitats, such as seagrass meadows along the coasts of Finland and Sweden, helping to strengthen the Baltic Sea’s resilience to climate change.

“The Baltic Sea is at the core of our logistics operations, connecting our offices and communities across the Nordic and Baltic region. Through our partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation and support for the SeaToo Project, we are taking tangible steps to safeguard marine ecosystems and contribute to real restoration work for the Baltic Sea’s future,” says Josefine Widegren, Owner and Board Member, Greencarrier Group.

“Our long-term work for the Baltic Sea has paid off, but there is still a long way to go before the Baltic Sea is in good condition. The healthy sea is more tolerant of ever-increasing effects of the climate change. Thank you Greencarrier for the long-lasting commitment to supporting our work to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage,” says the CEO of John Nurminen Foundation, Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt.

About the SeaToo Project

The SeaToo Project focuses on restoring underwater habitats in the Baltic Sea, starting with common eelgrass meadows — vital breeding and feeding grounds for countless marine species. These meadows also act as natural carbon sinks, storing carbon in the seabed and supporting the sea’s ecological balance. The project works to revive seagrass meadows along the coasts of Finland and Sweden, rebuild stone reefs, and restore sandy seabeds to create suitable conditions for eelgrass growth. In addition, it engages volunteer divers and citizen scientists to map and monitor potential restoration sites, combining community involvement with professional marine conservation.
