Greencarrier Consolidators launches Fuel Switch Routes with biofuel insets on shipments from Shanghai

Greencarrier is taking the next step in its “Shipping Made Fossil Free” concept by introducing Fuel Switch Routes – applying verified maritime biofuel insets by default on all Less-than-Container Load (LCL) import shipments from Shanghai to Hamburg and Gothenburg. The initiative makes these shipments fossil-free by default, at no extra cost to customers.

As part of its mission to accelerate the transition to fossil-free shipping, Greencarrier Consolidators today announced the launch of Fuel Switch Routes connecting China with the ports of Gothenburg and Hamburg. Through the Greencarrier Blue Initiative, the company will apply maritime biofuel insets automatically to every import shipment on these routes. The program is fully financed by Greencarrier, enabling customers to significantly reduce the CO₂ emissions associated with their transport – without any action, changes to their booking process, or additional cost.

“We see a need to take a proactive approach in accelerating the transition to fossil-free shipping. By including our customers in the use of biofuel insets by default on these major import routes, we are working together to reduce emissions – without added complexity or extra cost,” says Tim Jurischka, CEO of Greencarrier Consolidators.

For each shipment, Greencarrier matches and retires a verified volume of maritime biofuel inset through a certified book-and-claim system. This ensures that a specific and measurable CO₂ reduction is allocated, with full transparency and third-party verification.

“With these Fuel Switch Routes, we’re showing that fossil-free shipping can be straightforward, scalable, and effective — and that our industry can take responsibility for its carbon footprint. More importantly, we can now demonstrate that sustainability is an integrated part of our logistics offering — not an optional add-on or premium product. It must be embedded in every shipment and in daily logistics operations,” says Patrik Westraeus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier.

Earlier this year, Greencarrier launched the Shipping Made Fossil Free concept, allowing customers to test biofuel insets on any shipment at no cost. Building on that initiative, the company is now establishing Fuel Switch Routes that consistently apply biofuel on one of the world’s most important trade lanes.

Based on the volumes on the routes, Greencarrier Consolidators initially expects to achieve on average 5% CO₂ reduction per month in total.

Looking ahead, the concept is designed to be scalable and adaptable, with the potential to expand to additional routes while maintaining transparency and measurable results.

About Maritime Biofuel Insets

The maritime biofuel used for Greencarrier’s insets is produced from a sustainable feedstock, more specifically agricultural waste. After processing and certification, it is supplied into the maritime fuel system, where it contributes to reducing lifecycle CO₂ emissions compared with conventional marine fuels. The insetting model operates through a book-and-claim system, ensuring that the associated CO₂ reductions are traceable, third-party-verified, and transparently documented, even though the biofuel is not physically used on the specific vessel performing the transport.
