Maritime biofuel insets – a step forward for the maritime sector

It’s no secret that global maritime transport largely relies on fossil fuels and has a significant environmental impact. Shipping needs to become more environmentally sustainable, and as a company operating in sea freight and logistics, we fully recognize this challenge. Through reducing emissions from the maritime industry, the shipping industry can become more responsible.

“Our vision is to create a sustainable tomorrow.”

“We must act now. We have dared to challenge ourselves, the industry, and our customers. As a logistics group, Greencarrier does not own the vessels, but we still want to positively impact the environment and offer more sustainable transport solutions. We have found a solution through Maritime Biofuel Insets, which we see as a changemaker for the industry. This is not just an option for customers looking to reduce their emissions but also a pathway for the entire industry to take a step toward a sustainable future,” says Patrik Westræus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier.

As simple as choosing renewable electricity

Choosing fossil-free sea transport is as easy as opting for renewable electricity – it works in a similar way. Transport is booked using the book and claim method, based on the energy needed to transport containers across the ocean.

How it works

When booking sea transport, customers choose Maritime Biofuel Insets and decide what percentage of their transport’s emissions they want to reduce. We then replace the equivalent amount of fossil fuel with biomethane (LBG) using the book and claim methodology. By replacing fossil fuel with a renewable alternative, this immediately reduces the environmental impact.

The process is reviewed, certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), and third-party audited. This provides security for both Greencarrier and customers purchasing the fuel switch. All customers choosing Maritime Biofuel Insets receive documentation detailing how much CO₂ reduction has been achieved through the fuel transition.

This documentation can then be used for annual carbon reporting and validated by the customer’s own auditors.

“This is a very simple way for our customers to reduce their carbon emissions and contribute to more sustainable transport solutions, regardless of which ship or route they book. By choosing Maritime Biofuel Insets, customers can reduce their fossil fuel emissions by up to 100%,” says Patrik.

A step forward for the entire maritime sector

The shipping industry has been slow to transition to fossil-free alternatives, and it’s still early in the process of widely implementing fossil-free fuels. However, interest is growing rapidly. Large ships face challenges with electrification, making biomethane – in this case, sourced from agriculture – a viable alternative for the transition.
