We cannot sit and wait for others to act. The climate crisis is here and now, says Patrik Westræus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier.
In June 2024, Greencarrier took a significant step forward in its sustainability offering with the launch of Maritime Biofuel Insets – a product that enables a reduction of carbon emissions from sea transport by up to 100%.
By offering the benefits of biomethane in its transport solutions, Greencarrier has created a solution that is not only easy for customers to adopt, but also drives the shipping industry in a more sustainable direction.
When customers choose Maritime Biofuel Insets for their sea transport and decide on the percentage of emissions they want to reduce, Greencarrier ensures that an equivalent amount of fossil fuel is replaced with biomethane (LBG) using the book-and-claim method. By substituting fossil fuel with a renewable alternative, the environmental impact is reduced immediately. A certificate is then issued, documenting the achieved CO2 reduction.
Challenging the cost barrier of reducing emissions in sea transport
Patrik highlights that eliminating carbon emissions from a container shipment is an affordable investment.
For example, using Maritime Biofuel Insets on a route between Asia and Europe would be approximately €250 for an average TEU.
“In relation to the total transport cost, this is a marginal expense. Investing in sustainability is not just a responsibility – it is also a competitive advantage,” says Patrik.
Investments in new Sustainability Reporting
When the CSRD directive came into effect in 2025, many companies faced extensive requirements to report their climate impact. Patrik notes that while the increased reporting requirements are time-consuming, they are also crucial.
In 2024, Greencarrier invested in advanced data collection and reporting systems. These efforts not only strengthen Greencarrier’s own sustainability work but also make it easier for customers to access reliable emissions data, including Scope 3 emissions.
We cannot wait for IMO, the EU, or anyone else to take the next step – the climate crisis demands action now, concludes Patrik Westræus.
With solutions like Maritime Biofuel Insets, Greencarrier demonstrates that it is possible to combine sustainability with business value – while also inspiring others to follow suit.
