Our Spirit – The first sustainability report for the Greencarrier Group

“Sustainability for me is taking long term responsibility for the world around me and the people in it. To put it really simple – it is about caring.” says Stefan Björk, founder and owner of Greencarrier.

“This means that I want us at Greencarrier to care for our company and the people who work here, as well as for our customers and partners. But also for the people around us, the society and the planet. We call this long term commitment and sustainable approach to what we do, the Greencarrier Spirit.”

Our work with sustainability has been ongoing for many years, but this is our first sustainability report, which summarises our sustainability work for 2017.

We are proud to share our work, and hope that you will enjoy getting to know more about our Greencarrier Spirit!

Greencarrier Spirit – Corporate Social Responsibility on many levels

Corporate Social Responsibility refers to how companies manage the business processes to produce an overall positive impact on society. This can be done on many levels. With the aim of doing business in a sustainable way over the long-term, we have decided to focus on four key areas.

Our development through four perspectives

At Greencarrier we call our work with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) the Greencarrier Spirit. Our Greencarrier Spirit is about how we treat our employees and colleagues, how we do business, how we see ourselves as a citizen in society and the world around us, and how we contribute to a sustainable future. With the Greencarrier Spirit as a foundation, these are our four key areas:

1. CSR and employees – the people behind the Greencarrier brand

We embrace employees that want more from their employer than just a paycheck. We believe that being proud of what you do, having a purpose at work and being part of a company with values that matches your own, are legitimate employee demands. We take pride in our staff and always strive to be a good employer.

By investing in our staff’s well-being and development, we secure qualified, highly motivated staff that can help us become a more positive and successful company.

2. CSR and business
 – the responsibility of following laws and regulations

Acting according to the law is obvious to most companies, but acting ethically is not always as obvious. While the law is the key starting point for any business, acting in an ethical way means distinguishing between right and wrong, and then making the right choices. Our ethics underpin the decisions anyone at Greencarrier makes. We believe that working as an ethical business attracts and keeps customers, investors and employees. We also have our core values which set out our business principles and standards.

By conducting business according to ethical, professional and legal standards we are a fair and honest business partner. We stand for quality and personal commitment.

3. CSR and community – Greencarrier as a citizen in society and the world

We want to be a responsible corporate citizen and we believe that by caring for the world around us, and the people in it, we become a better business partner and employer. We take our role as a corporate citizen seriously, being involved in several CSR projects, both locally and globally.

Our policy is to promote positive development in activities such as education, sports and health care. Our projects include a wide range of sponsorships covering children’s rights to saving the Baltic Sea and supporting sports activities.

4. CSR and environment – contributing to a sustainable future

The impact of transportation on the environment is inherently negative. That’s why it’s important for us to be involved in environmental issues. We have a special focus to engage and take care of the environment, and we’re in it for the long term.

Our ambition is to apply the best possible environmental practice whenever we can. We always strive to minimise environmental impact, aiming for continuity in everything we do. We have a long-term commitment to environmental issues and are involved in various projects in the field.

Yes, it’s possible to produce an overall positive impact on the world around us

We are convinced that through our CSR activities and our way of doing things we will make a good contribution to society, find new and exciting business opportunities and attract new investors and employees. Our promise to the market “Yes, it’s possible” does not only permeates our organisation, it stretches further – to how we can make the world a better place together.

How we take responsibility for the environment

Environmental protection is an increasingly pressing issue all over the world. Every business today needs to consider how they can contribute to a more sustainable future. Being a logistics and transport company is no exception. This is what we do.

The Greencarrier Spirit fund – a commitment to sustainability projects

As transports have a significant impact on the environment, we think it’s extra important to make sure we reduce our ecological footprint as much as possible.

Therefore, in 2011, we decided to start a CSR fund that we call the Greencarrier Spirit fund. A part of the Greencarrier Group’s profit is assigned to CSR projects and everyone in the group can apply for support from this fund.

The aim is to promote commitment to sustainability projects and create good examples of how we work with sustainability, both locally and globally. The Greencarrier Spirit fund is open for all types of CSR activities, but we want to give special encouragement to environmental projects.

Environmental Review and Ambitions

This spring we have performed an environmental review in our group to find out how we can improve our environmental impact and increase our knowledge and awareness about the environment. With this as a foundation we can now take the next step.

How we engage and take care of the environment

As we believe it’s important for us to be involved in environmental issues, we engage and take care of the environment on many levels.

Improving our environmental impact
Considering transportation’s significant environmental impact, we strive to reduce the use of resources and prevent pollution of the air, water and soil and thereby constantly improving our environmental performance. We calculate emissions and evaluate our largest suppliers.

Increasing knowledge and awareness about the environment
Our ambition is to stimulate each employee to increase their knowledge about environmental issues, and be aware of the environmental aspects of their duties. We are introducing environmental training for all staff.

Communicating how we take responsibility for the environment
In order to spread knowledge about our environmental work we continuously communicate this work both internally and externally. (This blog article is one way of doing that!).

Involving everyone and complying with laws as a minimum
Customers, suppliers and other partners are, together with our employees, involved in this endeavor. As a minimum, we comply with laws, ordinances, regulations and other requirements. We want to go further than what the legislation requires from us.

Finding more sustainable projects

Our ambition is to increase our efforts to improve our environmental impact by finding more projects to support in this field. Our Greencarrier Spirit fund is one way of doing that.

How do you work to contribute to a greener future?

We’re committed to supporting a sustainable development. Naturally we encourage our customers to do the same! How do you work to contribute to a greener future? Let us know! Please leave a comment in the field below!

Beach cleaning day in Hong Kong – a win-win project

As a logistics and transport company we believe it’s extra important to care about the environment. Recently the Greencarrier offices in Hong Kong and Shenzhen organized a beach cleaning day at Po Toi Island, just outside Hong Kong.

Taking responsibility for our waters

We cannot hide from the fact that the environmental impact of transportation is significant. After all, transports are a major consumer of energy and burn much of the world’s petroleum. The best option for saving the environment would probably be to stop all global transportation. Since we’re dependent on transports, it might be a bit tricky… But, we can take responsibility for minimising our ecological footprint – starting with the ocean!

Trash is washed up on the shores, every day

Outside Hong Kong there are several islands, some are inhabited and some aren’t. What they all have in common is that a lot of trash is washed up on the shores every day, mainly coming with the tides from the big oceans outside the islands. The trash is polluting the beaches and the fish are eating the plastic – the same fish we might catch for dinner later.

Plastics pollution is one of the most serious threats to our oceans. Unlike other types of trash it doesn’t biodegrade. Instead it photo-degrades with sunlight, breaking down into smaller pieces, but they never really disappear. As it poses a significant threat to both ocean and human health, we thought we might do something to minimise its environmental impact.

Cleaning the beaches together on Po Toi Island

Together with the Swedish Chamber of commerce in Hong Kong we organised a beach cleaning day. We gathered our office staff, customers, friends and others and spent the entire day cleaning the beaches. It was a great opportunity to do something locally in our own community, especially because Hong Kong has a high environmental awareness.

The project corresponds well to the Greencarrier Spirit, which focuses on the environment, involving ourselves in projects (not only making donations), connecting to the local countries where we’re present and working with business related issues, including long term commitments.

After the cleaning was done, we enjoyed a good seafood lunch together and summed up the day. It was a fantastic day and there were a lot of happy faces when we returned from Po Toi Island to Hong Kong.

The work continues

We will continue to voice our concern for the environmental situation locally in Hong Kong, as well as globally. Our hope is to bring up some thoughts and reflections about how we all can make small changes in our lives towards a large positive change and perhaps also influence others to reduce the amount of trash through shared grass root efforts. Because in the end, it’s a win-win situation for all of us who share this planet.

Greencarrier at the Logistics & Transport exhibition in Gothenburg

Recently we participated in the Logistics and Transport exhibition in Gothenburg. It’s the leading logistics and transport trade fair and conference in Scandinavia. The two-days event was held for the fifteenth time. Naturally we were on the spot to meet customers and colleagues.

Meeting our Scandinavian and European customers

The Logistics & Transport exhibition is a dedicated trade fair and a vital event for everyone involved in the logistics and transport industry. Representatives from the whole industry meet including all the important players.

For us, participating in The Logistic and Transport exhibition in Gothenburg is an excellent opportunity to meet customers from Scandinavia and Europe.Clients and prospects get the chance to meet us face to face and this way it’s easier to start a dialogue and ask questions. It’s also great place to meet colleagues, suppliers and get updated on industry news and trends. During the exhibition we participated in several interesting workshops and a number of activities on the fair floor – from seminars and interviews, to competitions and award ceremonies.

Our approach on successful entrepreneurship

We introduced our presence at the exhibition by having our CEO at Greencarrier AB, Björn Eklund, interviewed by Johan Trouvé, CEO at West Sweden Chamber of Commerce. The topic of the discussion was Greencarrier’s approach on successful entrepreneurship. Björn described the Greencarrier Spirit, which is our way of doing things and highlighted in our CSR work the importance of taking care of the environment. Our promise to the market – yes, it’s possible – was described as one of our greatest assets.

A possibility lunch with an expert

On Wednesday we invited customers and colleagues to our possibility lunch. We offered a nice meal while listening to Per-Olof Arnäs, university lecturer at Chalmers, specialised in the logistics and transport area. He held a very interesting seminar about the digital transport system and how to upgrade a physical and analogue industry. According to Per-Olof, we’re only at the beginning of a gigantic exponential development curve. A new global ecosystem is emerging in which new types of knowledge-based industries are competing with traditional ones. We hope our participants enjoyed the seminar as much as we did!

Sharing our know-how and exchanging ideas

Our participation in the Logistics & Transport exhibition really gave us the opportunity to share our know-how and exchange ideas. We took part in many interesting and fruitful discussions and got so many brilliant ideas on subjects to write about on our blog! We’re taking them all into consideration, so remember – keep an eye out, perhaps you’re the inspiration behind our next article..!
Meanwhile, check out our Instagram for more pictures and updates about the exhibition and other events!
