From the freezer aisle to the future of logistics – An interview with our new AI architect Fredrik Sekander

When you hear about career journeys in the logistics industry, you don’t typically imagine they begin in the freezer aisle at a local supermarket. But that’s exactly where Fredrik Sekander’s story starts – and where two questions emerged that would shape his entire future: “How did this product end up here?” and “Can someone get me out of here?”.

It was 2009, and a growing curiosity for global supply chains – combined with the desire for something more – led him to pursue a degree in Maritime Science and Logistics. The rest, as they say, is history.

From Brisbane container yards to an internship as a Liner Agent

During Fredrik’s studies, he discovered just how fascinating and complex logistics can be.

“It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what sparked my interest, but experiences like loading containers in Brisbane and reflecting on how fish travels from the ocean to the freezer aisle probably played a part.”

His internship at MTA as a liner agent for ANL and Delmas became his first real step into the maritime world.

“I enjoyed calling myself an ‘agent’- even if it had more to do with ‘permission to ship’ than anything resembling Agent 007.”

In 2014, an opportunity opened within the company, and he transitioned into sea import as a forwarder at Hecksher – setting the stage for the next chapter.

Early years at Hecksher and a growing passion for technology

Although logistics was his starting point, another passion soon grew stronger: technology.

“I’ve always been drawn to tech. When others get frustrated with technology, that’s when I feel most motivated.”

The turning point came in 2022 when OpenAI released GPT-3.

“It changed everything. If you were good at something, you became even better. If you wanted to learn something, you suddenly had a private tutor at your disposal. I became fascinated by the potential of this new form of AI.”

Leadership quickly recognised his enthusiasm and invited him to join Greencarrier’s first AI initiative. Shortly after, he became part of the AI Core Team – marking the beginning of a new professional direction.

Switching paths: From forwarder to AI architect

So how do you shift from a traditional logistics role to a technical and strategic one?

“It wasn’t a sudden leap but rather an interest that kept growing. I got involved in internal AI projects, received support from leadership, and realised I wanted to pursue this path.”

Of course, the transition hasn’t been without challenges.

“I’m still learning every day. Moving from a role with clear, repetitive tasks to a broader, more dynamic position means constant development – but that’s also what I love about it.”

What does an AI architect do?

The role is evolving – and will continue to evolve.

“Right now, my work focuses on solving technical limitations and developing the AI solutions we’ve discussed in the AI Core Team. Later, I imagine the role becoming more externally focused, supporting our business areas and being more present in their daily challenges.”

Ultimately, the goal is to build smart, data-driven tools that simplify processes, improve quality, and empower people.

AI in logistics: A future full of possibilities

He is convinced that AI will transform logistics for the better.

“I think work in logistics will become more fun. Many repetitive tasks will be automated, leaving the meaningful work – the value-creating tasks – for employees and customers.”

And when it comes to sustainability, AI plays an important role:

“AI can optimise route planning for trucks and containers and improve data quality for reporting – benefiting even EU-level reporting. And sustainability isn’t just environmental; it includes social and economic aspects too. I hope we can explore valuable AI applications across all of them.”

What drives him – and his advice to others

Motivation takes different forms, but one thing stays constant:

“Helping others inspires me. And when that’s paired with a technical challenge, I completely lose track of time.”

For anyone considering a career shift, his advice is simple:

“Be brave. Curiosity and the willingness to learn are far more important than having all the answers from the start.”

Looking ahead: What’s next?

Professionally, he’s excited to continue developing the solutions that will guide the Greencarrier Group through its next digital chapter.

“The opportunities within AI and logistics are enormous, and I’m convinced we’re just at the beginning of a very exciting journey.”

And personally?

“To keep learning – and to see where this journey takes me next.”
