How Maritime Biofuel Insets work
Maritime Biofuel Insets are based on Liquefied Biogas, or LBG, a renewable marine fuel produced from manure and other organic waste materials. The solution works through a mass-balance principle, similar to how green electricity works.
This means that renewable fuel is added into the maritime fuel system, and the corresponding emission reductions are allocated to the customer’s shipment. The biofuel may not be used on the exact vessel carrying that specific shipment, but the overall use of renewable fuel in maritime transport increases.
Each order is documented with proof of the fuel allocation and an independently verified certificate showing the CO₂ reduction achieved through the fuel switch.
FCL shipments: choose your reduction level
For FCL shipments, customers can choose between three reduction levels depending on their climate ambitions, budget and reporting needs.

Level 1 – 25% CO₂ reduction
A first step for companies that want to begin reducing emissions from ocean freight.

Level 2 – 50% CO₂ reduction
A stronger reduction level for companies with more ambitious Scope 3 targets.
Price: €75
Level 3 – 100% CO₂ reduction
The highest reduction level, designed for companies that want to address the full fossil CO₂ footprint connected to the transport.

LCL shipments: reduce emissions from smaller cargo volumes
Maritime Biofuel Insets are also available for LCL shipments, making it possible to reduce fossil CO₂ emissions even when several customers share container space.

As an example, a shipment of average 1000 kg corresponding to 100 kg CO₂ can be reduced by 100% through a biofuel inset at a price of €15.
